Big Bend Treks

In the Big Bend area, I offer camel-assisted walking treks focusing on flora/fauna, history/prehistory and my camels carry all our gear. Participants will learn to load, unload and work the camels as we travel ranch roads, cattle trails, creek beds and mountain passes. Guests must be able to hike between 5 and 10 miles per day over varied terrain.

On these overnight or 3-day treks you and I will travel the same Big Bend region of West Texas that the historic U.S. Camel Corps explored in 1859 and 1860 on the Hartz/Echols expeditions. While the US military scouted fort locations and searched this area for better supply routes to the US/Mexican border, the present day treks combine desert scenery, history and ecology with the colorful part the Camel Corps played in settling the West!

"As the story of the Texas Camel Corps shows, Baum is a man who brings dreams to life." Texas Monthly

"The trek is a classroom of sorts..." Southern Living

"Throughout our two-day, 11-mile trek, Doug and fellow guide Steven Evans talk about ranching heritage, geology and wildlife. We saunter past creosote bushes, ocotillo and lechuguilla. We stir up mule deer and javelinas." Texas Highways

"Some folks find camels to be aloof, with their snouts held so snootily in the air. Some find them clumsy and comical. But I find them irresistible." Texas Parks and Wildlife

All treks include knowledgeable guides/cooks, tranquil nights sleeping out under the stars and endless photo opportunities in the Big Bend region of Texas.

Overnight in the Big Bend area, $1050 per person, 3 adult guests minimum. 3-day trek in the Big Bend area, $1350 per person, 3 adult guests minimum.
